Christmas, part 2

After our visit with Nana, we rushed home to see what Santa had left under the tree. Up until this time, Mateo was most excited about Santa bringing candy canes. After this moment, he was still most excited about the candy canes. Although Santa also brought this super cool tunnel that serves as Mateo's fort.

Kevin's family joined us in the early afternoon with the exception of Gabby Jan, who wasn't feeling well. One of Mateo's favorite gifts was this padded hockey stick from Uncle Kurt. A toddler computer from Aunt Pat, a train set from Papa and Gabby Etherton, and a trampoline from Papa and Gabby Meyer also ranked high on his list. As did a number of empty pop bottles. Kids are funny, aren't they?

Christmas, part 1

Christmas morning was expectedly quiet as we made a quick visit to exchange gifts with Grandma Vi. Not entirely quiet, though, as the whirling dervish you see in the photo is representative of Mateo after a night of interrupted sleep and a breakfast of cinnamon rolls. He ended up in a timeout after biting a chunk out of the handle of Nana's walker.

In the other photo, Grandma is wearing magic gloves: initially they were too small, then they were the wrong style, then they turned into money. Ooh-ahh.

More Christmas Eve

Additional photos - and yes, Aunt Diane and Mom DID go to church like that. Sara was also sporting some gold in her classy ensemble, but I don't have a good photo. This raises a point, Meyers - we need to do a big group photo next year, okay?

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve was a blast - Corey and Sara did a super job hosting the event at the farmstead. The festivities started with a portion of the crew heading off to church services, another few trekking out in the woods to find a lost flashlight, Sara's dad preparing to fry a turkey, and the remainder getting a headstart on the all-important eating/drinking/gabbing. Cousin Andrea won "The Most God-awful Christmas outfit" award in her gift-laden cardigan and red tights (isn't she cute?), although it was a close contest with two golden sweaters, a tree skirt, a Bush-Cheney polo shirt, pleated green corduroys and many other items hunted down at thrift stores and rescued from the dark recesses of closets. The night ended with a handful of brave souls being judged by Randy, Paula and Simon in American Idol karaoke. I don't seem to have audio of that. (You're welcome.)

"All I Want for Chrithmath"

Oh dear. Mateo was being a helper on Monday by carrying a Christmas tin up the basement stairs. At the top of the stairs he tripped landing face-first on top of the tin and cried, "Owa nose, owa nose". Once the tears subsided he brushed his teeth to get ready for naptime and said, "Owa tooth". Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Indeed, he did chip one of his front teeth, and all of his Mommy's childhood dental nightmares swooped in.
Today was his first visit to the dentist. Daddy and Mommy took advantage of the four days in between to be enthusiastic about the dentist. We explained how he's right next door to the library, and how it's his job to look at people's teeth, and we went over the "say ahh" routine. It seemed to work - Mateo was EXCITED to go to the dentist. We got there early and played with the toys and mastered the water machine. When his name was called he walked back (cautiously) to "the big chair", sat on Mommy's lap and watched cartoons. He opened his mouth for the dentist nicer than he ever has for his parents. It was all good until... the noise.
The dentist wanted to round off a sharp point on that chipped tooth, and once he started up that whirring little grinder Mateo freaked out. I felt so horrible holding his little arms against his body and he was kicking and struggling and screaming, and the hygienist was holding his head the best she could. When it was over Mateo calmed down, blew his nose on a tissue and handed it to the hygienist, who then led him to the toys. He picked out a bouncy ball, helped himself to another glass of water (his fourth, I think) and off we went trying to focus on the positive. From there we went to the bank where he informed the receptionist, "No like that noisy."

O Tannenbaum

The Great Christmas Tree Hunt took place the Sunday after Thanks-giving at Wagon Landing Tree Farm which would normally be a 15-minute drive from our house, but took us a good half hour. According to the professional mapmaker in our household: "the map sucked". Nevertheless, we arrived and trekked out into the field of evergreens bracing ourselves against the cold wind in search of "the one". It seemed the perfect height at the tree farm and we felt good about our choice as we drove home (not getting lost) with our bounty strapped to the roof of the minivan. Alas, when we arrived home we discovered that the trunk of our beautiful tree was too thick for our very old tree stand so Kevin took to it with the saw. Still too thick. Kevin headed off to buy a more accommodating tree stand, some eggnog and some rum. Now our tree stands in the family room with a good two feet of headspace. All the more room for a gigantic tree topper, my dear.

Thanksgiving #2

Round 2 of Thanks-giving happened potluck-style in the common area of Grandma Jean's apartment building. In attendance were Great Grandma Jean, Gabby Karen and Papa Chris, Uncle Mike and Skye, Uncle George, Uncle Randy, Aunt Diane, and cousins Curt and Andrea. I took a picture of the whole group as we were leaving, but managed to cut the majority of the heads off so it appears to be a bunch of torsos hanging around. This one will have to do - sorry about YOUR head, Gabby :-) Anyway... Mateo entertained us all by running up and down the hallways, playing on the ancient stationary exercycle, pushing elevator buttons and singing Christmas carols into the handle of Great Grandma's walker.
